This talk aims to discuss the typology of new forms of states emerging recently with analyzing recent developments in Hungary. I argue here that Hungary serves as "laboratory" of illiberal policies with constructing a new form of state. This laboratory
revoked the license of study programs in gender studies, without explanation and consultation with professional institutions in Hungary. It is attacking science as knowledge, as a profession and as a practice with making statements about scientific matters without consultation with representatives of the profession. And it also attacks academics and professionals. The illiberal polypore state (Grzebalska / Pető 2018) is fundamentally changing the security of spaces where academics work. The talk ends with listing possible strategies progressive forces can use against illiberal polypore states.

ANDREA PETŐ is Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University, Budapest, Hungary and a Doctor of Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She has written five monographs, edited thirty-one volumes and her works on gender, politics, Holocaust and war have been translated into 18 languages. In 2018 she was awarded the 2018 All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values.
