Feminist debates on intersectionality in South Asia have highlighted it as being the latest example of the imperialism of categories, whereby only northern concepts have the power of being universal while effectively erasing southern, extant, non-single axis feminist frameworks. Additionally, as an integral component of 'gender mainstreaming', pushed by the UN and other international funders, it has not only been depoliticised but has also become part of a global agenda of governmentality. This paper will engage some of these debates while reflecting on what kinds of categories and intersections are most useful 'to think with' when analysing everyday forms of resistance practiced by women and men from ethnic minorities and marginalized sexualities in war-time and post-war Sri Lanka.
Malathi De Alwis
MALATHI DE ALWIS is a Socio-Cultural Anthropologist affiliated with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo. She has written extensively on nationalism, militarisation, humanitarianism, maternalism, 'disappearance', suffering, trauma, and memorialisation. Her most recent publication - Archive of Memory (2019), is an object-related people's history of Sri Lanka's 70 years of Independence.
